HAZARDOUS WASTE DISPOSAL

Hazardous waste is regulated by multiple government entities but the primary federal agency that defines the requirements is the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)


Hazardous waste has been defined by the EPA as being a waste with properties that make it dangerous or capable of having a harmful effect on human health or the environment. This waste can come in many forms including liquids, gases, sludges and solids.

P-LIST & U-LIST WASTE

P and U listed hazardous waste are mainly commercial grade formulations of a certain type of chemical which is being disposed of. Waste that will be classified as P or U listed waste must meet three criteria defined by the epa:


  1. THE WASTE MUST CONTAIN ONE OF THE CHEMICALS LISTED ON THE P OR U LIST;
  2. THE CHEMICAL IN THE WASTE MUST BE UNUSED; AND
  3. THE CHEMICAL IN THE WASTE MUST BE IN THE FORM OF A COMMERCIAL CHEMICAL PRODUCT


A commercial product by EPA’s definition is a chemical that is either 100% pure, commercial grade or the sole active ingredient in a chemical formulation.

P-LIST & U-LIST WASTE

Waste more commonly found in manufacturing and industrial processes is are F-list.

F-listed waste can be divided into seven groups:

  • Wood preserving wastes
  • Dioxin-bearing wastes
  • Refinery wastewater treatment sludges
  • Spent solvent wastes
  • Electroplating and other metal finishing wastes
  • Production chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons

K-LIST WASTE

Waste that falls into one of the 13 k-listed categories must match on of the detailed k list waste descriptions 40 CFR section 261.32. There are 13 industries that generate K listed waste.

  • Wood preservation,
  • Organic chemicals manufacturing,
  • Pesticides manufacturing,
  • Petroleum refining,
  • Veterinary pharmaceuticals manufacturing,
  • inorganic pigment manufacturing,
  • Inorganic chemicals manufacturing,
  • Explosive’s manufacturing,
  • Iron and steel production,
  • Primary aluminum production,
  • Secondary lead processing,
  • Ink formulation, and
  • Coking (processing of coal to produce coke).
